Man's Ankle Crushed by Excavator

A safety officer is "very lucky" to have no serious injuries after an excavator crushed his foot.

Emergency services were called to a home in Mt Pleasant, Christchurch, about 3.15pm on Wednesday after a 1Geotechnical employee had their ankle broken by an excavator.

A St John spokesman said a man, in his 40s, was taken to hospital. 1Geotechnical director Stephen Greening said the man was "very lucky".

"All procedures were followed, essentially we think it's just been a momentary lapse in concentration and the excavator has rolled back and hit the gentleman's foot and then he's had to roll back forward from it. "He got very lucky . . . it could have been a worse scenario if they hadn't taken the evasive action they had."

Greening said he had since spoken to the man, who had been with the company for several years. "We just want him healthy and back to work as soon as he can. He's been with our company for a long, long time."
