Nurse Accused of Raping Three Female Prisoners

A mental health nurse accused of raping three female prisoners told a colleague he was checking an inmate's make-up when she found them alone in a room, a jury heard. Peter Barrowman denies raping three inmates in 2014, and indecently assaulting a fourth at HMP Cornton Vale between 2009 and 2010.

He also denies supplying drugs to prisoners. Prison officer Janine Hunter, 40, told the trial Barrowman, 35, was “hyper”.

She said she saw him take the woman he is accused of assaulting and later threatening into a nurse’s room and shut the door. She went in 10 minutes later.

Hunter said: “He was a bit flustered. He was standing between her legs. He said he was checking her foundation.

The man who spearheaded a high-profile campaign against speed cameras in the Highlands has been left embarrassed – after being caught speeding. Mike Burns, founding member of the group “A9 Average Speed Cameras Are Not The Answer”, was fined £180 this week after being captured by a speed camera doing 40mph in a 30mph zone. But while he “holds his hands up” to the offence, he has now embarked on a fresh battle with the authorities to have his conviction thrown out.

The Foyers-based campaigner has raised a series of complaints over the “shocking” handling of the process by police, prosecutors and the court service.

Mr Burns shot to prominence in 2013 when he became the most outspoken opponent of the Scottish Government’s controversial introduction of average speed cameras on the A9 Inverness to Perth road.

A mobile speed camera captured Mr Burns driving his Volkswagen Passat at 40mph just a few feet from the signs that mark the end of the 30mph zone near Cromdale on the A95, at 10.17am, on February 20.

Mr Burns was fined £180 at the Justice of the Peace Court in Inverness on Wednesday and had his licence endorsed with three points.

However, he has raised a series of concerns in relation to the procedures which led to the penalty, and what he called “interesting discrepancies”.

His initial complaint, which was upheld after a police investigation but has since been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) for a further review, relates to “inaccurate” information provided to him in correspondence with the East Scotland Safety Camera manager Andrew Jones, claiming he had been caught by a fixed camera rather than a mobile one.

Father and Daughter Beat Up Train Passenger Causing Extreme Brain Injuries

A court heard Michael and Hayley Friel were travelling home when the door to a lavatory cubicle was opened while she was in there. Her furious father questioned other passengers to try to find who had opened it after she was left “exposed and embarrassed”.

Michael Friel, 58, who was jailed on Thursday for two years, then became “intimidating and threatening”, Chester Crown Court was told.

Passenger James Clarke said he was to blame –even though he did not open the door – to try to calm the father and deflect attention from the person responsible, a woman sitting near the lavatory.

More than 18 months after the attack, he cannot walk 100 yards unaided and remembers nothing of the attack because of his “life-changing injuries”.

Woman Charged to Court for Giving Water to Pigs

The trial of a woman who
gave water to slaughterhouse-bound pigs heard Wednesday from the owner of the animals who said he complained to police because he was concerned about the safety of the pigs and the animal activists.

Anita Krajnc, an activist with the group Toronto Pig Save, was charged with mischief in connection with an incident in June 2015, in which she started dumping water inside a tractor trailer carrying pigs to a slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ont. She has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The pigs' owner, farmer Eric Van Boekel, testified Wednesday that he complained to police because
he was worried there were contaminants in the water, and that could lead the Fearman's Pork slaughterhouse to turn his hogs away. That, he said, would be the worst case scenario, though he acknowledged that it's never happened to him. Van Boekel also said he was worried about the animal activists.

Krajnc, who was wearing a pink shirt with a
picture of a pig on it under her pantsuit, said
outside court that she did nothing wrong, and
that she continues to give the pigs waterto this day.

The man “was in the apartment for a while and he asked the maid to leave for some privacy while he took a shower,” according to Schulz.

Suicide Truck Bomb Kills 11 in Turkey, Wounds Another 78

Smoke still rises from the scene after Kurdish militants attacked a police checkpoint in Cizre, southeast Turkey, Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, with an explosives-laden truck, killing several police officers and wounding dozens more, according to reports from the state-run Anadolu news agency. The attack struck the checkpoint some 50 meters (yards) from a main police station near the town of Cizre, in the mainly-Kurdish Sirnak province that borders Syria. Turkish authorities have put a temporary ban on distribution ofimages relating to Friday’s Cizre attack within Turkey.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which was the latest in a string of bombings targeting police or military vehicles and facilities. Authorities have blamed the Kurdistan Workers’ Party,
or PKK, for those attacks. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the attack was a PKK suicide bombing carried out with an explosives-laden truck. He vowed to “destroy the terrorists.”

Turkey sent tanks across the Syrian border following weeks of deadly attacks by the PKK and the Islamic
State group. The operation aims to help Syrian rebels retake Jarablus, a
key IS-held border town, and to contain the expansion of Syrian Kurdish militia who are linked to the PKK.

Rio Olympian Sells His Silver Medal to Help Child Struggling With Eye Cancer

A Rio 2016 silver medallist is being hailed as the true embodiment of Olympic spirit after selling off his newly minted medal to fund specialist treatment for a boy with a rare form of cancer.

Piotr Malachowski took second place in the discus to become one of 11 Polish Olympians to bag a medal in Rio. It was his second silver after netting one in Beijing in 2008.

The Olympian told his followers how he had been contacted by the mother of three-year-old Olek Szymanski, who has spent almost two years battling retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer that affects young children. As a result, Malachowski said, he was auctioning off his medal to help pay for Olek and his family to travel to New York and receive specialist treatment not currently available in Poland.

The auction was won by Poland's billionaire siblings Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, who "declared their willingness to buy my silver medal for an amount which enables us to meet the goal set", wrote the Malachowski. "My silver medal today is worth much more than a week ago," he added.

News of the generous gesture spread quickly, with people around the world applauding his compassion. "This is the real Olympic spirit. Bravo!" wrote one admirer, while another added: "You have a true heart of gold."

Boy Drowned by Group of Brutal Teens

Four more teenage boys were arrested Friday in connection with the slaying of a boy whose body was found
on a riverbank in Saitama Prefecture on Tuesday.

A fifth teen was arrested Thursday after allegedly bragging on an online messaging system that he had killed someone.

The latest suspects to be arrested are a
17-year-old boy, a 14-year-old junior
high school student and a 15-year-old
junior high school student from
Higashimatsuyama, Saitama Prefecture,
and a 15-year-old junior high school
boy from Kawagoe, Saitama. Investigative sources say the teens are believed to have known the victim, 16 -year-old Tsubasa Inoue. All are
suspected of playing a role in his killing.

Police say three of the latest detainees have admitted to the allegations, but the 15-year-old from Higashimatsuyama said he was merely present at the time
and did not play a role. Inoue’s naked body was found half- buried beside the Toki River in Higashimatsuyama on Tuesday morning. He is thought to have drowned when the river flooded, but his body also bore bruiselike marks. It is unclear how these were inflicted, but the sources said the victim may have been physically assaulted before his death.

Details have been emerging of the boys’
relationship with the victim. Inoue accompanied them on a trip to a hot spring from Aug. 17 to 20, an acquaintance of Inoue’s said, noting that he seemed to have enjoyed the outing.

One of Inoue’s friends told police that the group had been forcing him to provide money to pay for gasoline for their motorbikes. Inoue had recently asked others if he could borrow cash, the friend said.

Investigative sources said the 16-year- old boy arrested Thursday has admitted playing a part in the death, saying he killed Inoue because he had lied and ignored phone calls and text messages. Some of those arrested belonged to a group that was known for bullying
others in the past. A boy who was friends with Inoue went to police when the group beat him up.
Officers did nothing, he said, dismissing the incident as typical teenager behavior.

"The defendant in this case was angry at the victim who had recently asked him to move out of their shared home following tension in the relationship that had escalated around Christmas Day," said Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan. While officers were en route to the home, Resto, 52, walked into the lobby of the police station with blood on his clothes, holding a large knife. When officers tried to place Resto under arrest, he lunged at them multiple times, according to the district attorney's statement. They ultimately were able to subdue him.
